What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels improve the face, neck, and hand skin. A chemical solution exfoliates and peels the skin. The regenerated skin is smoother and less wrinkled. However, fresh skin is momentarily more sun-sensitive. Three main chemical peels exist:

Benefits of Chemical Peel

  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin texture and tone
  • Fading of sun damage and age spots
  • Treatment of acne scars (depending on the peel depth)

Safety Precautions after having a chemical peel?

All peels require some follow-up care: The healing time for superficial peels is 1-7 days. Skin treated may be red and scale. You should apply lotion or cream until your skin heals, then sunblock daily. Most makeup can be worn the next day.

Healing takes 7-14 days for medium peels. The treated skin will be red and inflamed. Initial swelling worsens for 48 hours. Swelling of eyelids may occur. Blisters can break out. The skin crusts and peels in 7-14 days.  You should soak your skin every day for a certain time before applying ointment. Antiviral treatment can be needed for 10–14 days in case of break-outs. Apply mild lotion or cream. Avoid sunlight until recovery is complete. Camouflage makeup is allowed after 5–7 days. A follow-up appointment is needed to track progress.

Healing takes 14–21 days for deep peels. The area treated will be bandaged post-treatment. Soak skin four to six times a day and apply ointment for 14 days. Then a heavy moisturizer is administered for 14 days. Antiviral treatment can be needed for 10–14 days. Apply mild lotion or cream. Stay out of the sun for 3–6 months. Camouflage makeup is allowed after 14 days. Multiple follow-up appointments are needed to track improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

A chemical peel can cause mild discomfort, such as a tingling or burning sensation. The intensity depends on the peel’s strength. Deeper peels might require local anesthesia.

Chemical peels exfoliate the top skin layers, promoting cell turnover and revealing smoother, brighter skin. They can reduce fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars.

  • Superficial Peels: Mild, using alpha or beta hydroxy acids, ideal for light exfoliation.
  • Medium Peels: Using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), targeting deeper layers for moderate wrinkles and pigmentation.
  • Deep Peels: Using phenol, for severe wrinkles and deeper scars, with more significant downtime.

Treatment Process

A chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin underneath is typically smoother and less wrinkled.

There are three main types: superficial (light) peels, medium peels, and deep peels. Each type penetrates different layers of the skin and is used for different skin concerns.

Preparation and Safety

Avoid sun exposure and discontinue the use of retinoids or other skin treatments as advised by your practitioner. Follow any specific instructions provided during your consultation.

Yes, when performed by a qualified professional, chemical peels are safe. It’s important to follow pre- and post-treatment care instructions to minimize risks.

During and After the Procedure

During the procedure, you may feel a burning or tingling sensation. The duration and intensity depend on the type of peel.

Recovery time varies: superficial peels have minimal downtime, medium peels may require a few days to a week, and deep peels can take several weeks to heal.

Results and Maintenance

Results vary depending on the type of peel. Superficial peels may show results in a few days, while medium and deep peels may take several weeks for full results to appear.

Results can last several months to years, depending on the depth of the peel and how well you care for your skin post-treatment.

Side Effects and Risks

Common side effects include redness, peeling, and temporary sensitivity. These effects usually subside within a few days to a week.

While rare, deep peels carry a risk of scarring and permanent skin color changes. It’s crucial to have the procedure done by an experienced professional.

Suitability and Frequency

Ideal candidates are those with fair to medium skin tones and specific skin concerns like acne scars or fine lines. A consultation will determine your suitability.

Superficial peels can be done every 4-6 weeks, medium peels every few months, and deep peels usually only once every few years.

Post-Treatment Care

Avoid sun exposure, use gentle skincare products, and apply moisturizer and sunscreen regularly. Follow all specific aftercare instructions given by your provider.

It’s best to avoid makeup for at least a few days after the peel to allow your skin to heal properly. Follow your provider’s recommendations.
